Christa Tuczay: Magie und Magier im Mittelalter (German language, 2003, Deutsche Taschenbuch Verlag) No rating

This book about "Magic and Mages in the Middle Ages" contains the following chapters:

  1. The Heritage of Antiquity
  2. Christianity
  3. Magic and the Church
  4. The Legal Situation
  5. Oriental Influences and Tradition
  6. Heathen Europe
  7. Magic and Science
  8. Magical Practice
  9. Shamans and Witches in the Middle Ages
  10. Magic in Courtly Literature of the Middle Ages

My first impression is that this book is less about folkloric practice and more about the social context of #magic in the Middle Ages. But that, too, should be very useful to know for my planned book on magic-related folk tales from German #folklore .

wants to read Magie im Mittelalter by Helmut Birkhan (Beck'sche reihe, #1901)

Helmut Birkhan: Magie im Mittelalter (German language, 2010, Verlag C.H. Beck) No rating

This book on "Magic in the Middle Ages" has the following chapters:

  • Definition of "Magic"
  • Patterns of thought underlying superstition and magic
  • Magic of scholars in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age
  • Magic in folk belief
  • Increase in magical practice in the Late Medieval Ages

All of these should be highly relevant and useful for my planned book on tales of #magic from German #folklore.

UFOs (1999, Karl Müller Verlag) No rating

I haven't come across any evidence that would convince me that extraterrestrials (or ultraterrestrials, for that matter) have visited Earth in historic times, but there is a surprising overlap with #folklore .

Night hags/sleep paralysis demons are the most obvious example, but there are numerous other weird phenomena in old folk tales that would pass as " #UFO lore" nowadays. Fiery spheres or streaks in the sky, weird substances dropping down from up high, and so on and so forth. I might even write a book of folk tales about such "Fortean Phenomena" one day, if I find the time - I certainly have enough source material to work with!
